Day 2:
An early start toward Angahuan and the Paricutin Volcano. Along the way we'll enter Purepechan indigenous communities, a people that has preserved their language and traditions since pre-Hispanic times. Upon arrival in Angahuan we will travel on horseback (or on foot, if preferred) to the lava-covered church of San Juan Viejo, the town's only remaining landmark. Returning through Uruapan we will stop at the waterfall park and see the many interesting fountains and waterfalls it has to offer. Night in Uruapan.
Day 3 We will take another boat over to Janitzio Island, a Purepechan community famous for their interesting fishing method, and climb the stairs inside the statue of Morelos that provides a great view of Lake Patzcuaro. After returning to shore, we'll go to Patzcuaro, a beautiful little town to shop for gifts, explore, and spend the afternoon. Afterwards, it is on to Zirahuen where we will enjoy a delicious dinner alongside what is said to be the cleanest lake in Mexico. Our evening will be spent in Patzcuaro.
Day 4: A shopping tour of Quiroga for leather goods, Tzintzuntzan for wood carvings, and Santa Clara del Cobre for copper. We'll get into where some of these handicrafts are being made to see some of the ancient methods the people continue to use today. These quaint little towns are also great for sight-seeing, sampling the local cuisine, or getting to know the friendly people. Return to Morelia for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 A day in the hot springs of Los Azufres National Park. We'll visit Lake Los Azufres, famous for its ability to cure everything from skin problems to arthritis, and hike in to a quiet little hot spring to spend the rest of the day relaxing (depending on the physical condition of the group, otherwise we will use more accessible facilities). We'll also see an archeological site and the first Franciscan church in Mexico. Our evening will be spent in the comfort of Rancho San Cayetano near the city of Zitacuaro.
Day 6 In the morning we will hike into the monarch butterfly sanctuary and spend the day marveling the incredible sight. We' ll spend the night in San Cayetano.
