                                                Bicycling the route of the Maya (Chiapas region)


Travel through most of the Maya World, from Cancun to Chiapas. Cycle through the amazing tropical rainforest of Chiapas, the most biodiverse state of Mexico. On the way discover fascinating thatched - roof villages where Maya people still live in the area.

Penetrate the jungle and learn about the wide flora and fauna in the area, plus discover unique waterfalls, lagoons, canyons, and mountains as you bike each day. Marvel at the amazing architectural and engineering skills manifest in once great Mayan city - states: Palenque, Yaxchilan and Calakmul. Take a boat and cross the river to Guatemala. Cool off in the many rivers, lagoons and waterfalls in Chiapas. Stay in 3-star hotels and inns; enjoy delicious Maya and Mexican cuisine. Above all, enjoy the welcoming smiles of the people of Chiapas--they respect guests and show it. In summary, there are 8 days biking, 3 days for transportation to Chiapas and 3 days for the return to Cancun, all included in the new price with entrance fees to the reserves and archeological sites, 4 additional nights in 1st class hotels, van transportation, and most meals.

Day 1

Pick up persons in the international airport of Cancun. Transfer to Hotel Rey del Caribe. Meals on your own.

Day 2

Early depart to Campeche. Check in Chicanna ecovillage. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 3

Early departure to Tuxtla Gutierrez. Dinner in the hotel Mayasol. Participants will assemble and adjust bikes and relax in the area.

Day 4
(vTuxtla Gutierrez – Chiapa de Corzo – Tuxtla Gutierrez) 20 miles

Begin the day by riding 10 miles to the Sumidero Canyon where we will take a boat ride through the Grijalva River. Enjoy amazing scenery and wildlife viewing. Lunch in El Camapanario restaurant. Back to our hotel 10 miles. In the afternoon transfer by van to San Cristobal de las Casas colonial town ( 50 miles ). Check in at Hotel Casa Mexicana. San Cristóbal is certainly the nicest colonial city of Chiapas. It was founded in 1528. It is located at more than 6000 feet high. Climate is fresh all the year. It has a population of 100,000. The area has more than 1 million Maya people.

Day 5

( Hotel Casa Mexicana – San Juan Chamula ) 20 miles.

Start the day biking downhill to Zinacatan Maya community town, whose people work at flower farming. Enjoy visiting the town. Follow to San Juan Chamula town which has all the flavour of the old Maya villages with rituals of last century still in practice. Back to the hotel by van. Rest stop in Zinacatan (8 miles). A guide will be available at 9:00 AM “ to explain to the group about Zinacatan. The second rest stop will be in San Juan Chamula ( 11 miles more). A guide will explain about the town at 11:00 AM.

Day 6

( San Cristobal – Comitan ). 54 miles.

Bike downhill to the city of Comitan where you can enjoy a visit to the many temples the city has ( Comitan is the origin of independence of Chiapas ). Check in at the Hotel Internacional. Rest stop in Teopisca town ( 20 miles ). A guide will be available to do a city tour at 4:00 PM. in Comitan.

Day 7

( Comitan – Montebello Lagoons ) 38 miles.

Today enjoy biking and arriving at an area which has fantastic scenery, the Montebello lagoons, which have more than 50 lagoons with green and blue colors. Check in at Tzicao hotel by one of the lagoons. Rest stop in bridge with tubes ( 23 miles ). A Guide will be available for the group to visit some of the lagoons.

Day 8

(Montebello Lagoons – Ixcan ) 64 miles

Begin the day with an optional birdwatching hike. We are in the land of the Quetzal ( Very unique and interesting bird of the trogon family ) and early in the morning we get to see them sometimes. This is the longest day biking but a good part of it is going downhill. Check in at Ixcan Conservation International Research Station. Optional night hike in the jungle. Rest stop in viewing point ( 8.9 miles ) area where sometimes we see Quetzals. Rest stop in Nuevo San Juan Chamula ( 26 miles ). Take a look at the church. Rest stop in the town of Santo Domingo ( 38.8 miles ).

Day 9

( Benemerito town – Corozal ) 41 miles

Optional birdwatching hike in the area. Transfer by van to Lacantun bridge where we will start our riding day. In the van we will pass by the Scarlet Macaw area. Very nice scenery and possibility to see Scarlet Macaws as well as other species in the wild. Enjoy amazing scenery along the river. The other side of the river is the country of Guatemala. Our riding day will get us to Escudo Jaguar cabins crossing Lacantun reserve. Optional night hike in the jungle. Rest stop in El Corozal bridge ( 21 miles ).

Day 10

( Escudo Jaguar Hotel – Palenque ) Option A - 41 miles. Option B – 61 miles.

Optional birdwatching hike in the jungle. Begin the day with a boat ride to Yaxchilan Archeological site. This will take us 2.5 hours in the morning. After visiting Yaxchilan start biking towards Palenque. Option A – 41 miles riding. Option B 61 miles riding. After biking we are transfered by van to Palenque. Check in Maya Tulipanes hotel. Rest stop in Corozal crossing point ( 10.75 miles). Rest stop number 2 in military check point ( 28 miles .)

Day 11

Enjoy an early 5- mile bike ride to Palenque Archeological Site. Explanation of the site at 9:00 AM in the morning. After visiting Palenque, transfer by van to enjoy the marvelous turquoise blue waterfalls. Hiking in the area. Back to the hotel.

Day 12

Van transfer back to Cancun. After breakfast drive all the way back to La Puerta Calakmul hotel. Check Visit the amazing Calakmul reserve enjoying much wildlife on the way to the reserve and archeological site. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 13

After breakfast van transfer to Cancun. On the way stop in Kohunlich archeological site and Bacalar lagoon. Arrival and check in Rey del Caribe hotel in Cancun.

Day 14

Van transfer to the airport depending on flights back.
