Day 1 Arrival in the beautiful colonial city Morelia, capital of Michoacan, and transfer from the airport or bus station to the 16th century Hotel La Soledad. After getting oriented and discussing the week's events we will enjoy a welcome dinner and local Michoacan entertainment.
Day 2 An early start toward Angahuan and the Paricutin Volcano. Along the way we will enter Purepechan indigenous communities, a people that has preserved their language and culture since pre- Hispanic times. Upon arrival in Angahuan we'll be traveling on horseback (or on foot, if preferred) to the Paricutin Volcano to experience the incredible view from above and see the ever-active steam shoots. On our return we'll stop by the lava-covered church of San Juan Viejo, the town's only remaining landmark. A short trip to Uruapan will bring us to a well-deserved night's rest.
Day 3 After a good breakfast we set out toward Coalcoman. Along the way we'll stop to buy fruit in one of the orchards or market areas surrounding Uruapan and take in a couple of breathtaking lookouts. After a light lunch in Coalcoman we'll introduce you to the fascinating world of caving. A challenging ordeal, but well worth the effort. On return we'll have dinner and spend the evening in this small, but historically significant town.
Day 4 We leave Coalcoman for La Ticla, a small beach community on Michoacan's nearly virgin coast. The rest of the day we'll spend on the beach, enjoying the surf and sun. In the evening, after the amazing sunset, we will see the fascinating migration of the Laud, Black, and Golfina sea turtles. The night will be spent in the rustic beach cabins of La Ticla.
Day 5 After a morning snorkeling and checking out a pelican sanctuary in El Faro de Bucerias, we will make our way to Villa Dorada, Michoacan's only luxury beach resort. Free time in the afternoon and evening to swim, snorkel, see a ship wreck, or just enjoy the beach.
Day 6 Travel to Huetamo where we will canoe down the swift flowing Balsas River. We'll be staying the night at a first class hotel in this bustling little farm community.
Day 7 After the trip to Zitacuaro, we'll visit the monarch butterfly sanctuary where we will see the millions of butterflies that migrate from Canada and the United States to this incomparable location every year. A short trip, during which we'll stop to see the archeological site in San Felipe, will bring us to Los Azufres where we can relax in the many hot springs and mud baths. Our evening will be spent in Morelia where we will enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 8 Farewell and transfer to bus station or airport in Morelia.
