Mexico's Yucatan and our Caribbean coastline, in particular, have been blessed with an incredible array of Mother Nature's tropical inventory. For starters, there's an underground river system and the intriguing geological formations creating massive caverns and mystery-laden cenotes (natural wells). Then there are the jungles, reefs and beaches serving as backdrop to hundreds of specie of resident and migratory birds, a splendid display of sea life and a fascinating potpourri of flora and fauna. All, of course, alluring in themselves but some, when combined with sport, can offer an even broader experience.
We have compiled information about many activities available. You may click on underlined subjects for more information.
Beaches - World Class Beaches. Need we say more? Maybe just a little, with photos.
Bicycling - day rentals available in Playa del Carmen. While touring equipment in not available, you may opt to bring your own wheels. However, the current 4-lane version of MEX 307 might cause a biker to think twice. Biking along the Boca Paila road (Tulum area) or the Majahual / Xcalak corridor are enjoyable...
Birdwatching - Avian life abounds in the region with opportunities for novice and serious birdwatcher alike. To witness large flocks of flamingos, visit Villas Flamingos on Isla Holbox.
Cenotes - A special geological feature of the Yucatan. Formed when the ceiling of a cavern falls in a freshwater pool if formed. Definitely worth a look. In the Tulum area you'll find the Grand Cenote, Cenote Escondido, Casa Cenote, Car Wash (great for swimming), Dos Ojos & various others.
Fishing (Bone) - exceptional and world-class in the flats and lagoons of the coast, particularly at Boca Paila (south of Tulum) and the Mahajual - Xcalak area. Limited accessibility and pre-arrangements can be difficult. Bring your own gear.
Fishing (Deep-Sea) - excellent with marlin and sailfish plentiful from mid-April through the summer months. No "party boats". Native guides in Boston Whaler-type boats (some with outriggers). Arrangements can be made at most of the area's dive shops. While there is some equipment available, it is suggested that you bring your own.
Golf - an 18-hole championship layout is in operation at the PlayaCar resort area in Playa del Carmen and arrangements can be made for play here with the Turquoise Reef Group or at your hotel on arrival. There's a 9-hole course at Puerto Aventuras, about 20 km. south of town. In the Hotel Zone of Cancun, 50 miles to the north, there are two 18-hole courses.
Horseback Riding - there are a couple of service operators in the area offering beach and jungle touring. Arrangements can be made with your hotel reception desk upon arrival.
Mayan Ruins - A major reason to visit the Yucatan! They can be found in abundance in the Playa del Carmen area and all over the peninsula. Casa Mexilio in Merida is a great base for visits to Chichen-Itza and/or Uxmal.
Sailing - limited availability. No "sunfish" or "bare-boat" charters. Some independent operators offer day charters with crew.
SCUBA diving - long the premier attraction of the Caribbean, there are shops galore in Playa del Carmen and the surrounding area and, of course, all of our Turquoise Reef facilities offer these services. Proof of certification required.
Sea-kayaking - limited availability through some of the dive shops. Though there is a new operator in the Punta Allen area, because of the lack of communications, advance reservations are difficult.
Snorkeling - long the 'step-child' of the skin diving family, it has now come into its own. It's easy and quite inexpensive. It doesn't require lengthy training, certification, or bulky equipment. And, perhaps most important, it's portable - a carry-all with masks, fins, and snorkel and you're on your way to enjoy the awesome beauty and mystery of the deep. In addition to the numerous coves and lagoons to explore along our Caribbean coastline, most shops offer specialty trips to the reef system and all offer rental equipment.
Tennis - limited availability. Two courts at the PlayaCar golf club and many of Cancun's hotels have their own facilities. None of the Turquoise Reef Resorts have courts.

Windsurfing - many of the shops in the area offer this equipment. Some practitioners, however, opt to bring their own sailboards as baggage for which the airlines may charge an extra fee.
Turquoise Reef Travel - offers concierge service in Playa del Carmen. Once you arrive in Mexico, Turquoise Reef Travel will be happy to help with ruins tours, excursions or whatever you would like to add to your vacation experience.
