TURTLE TALK
Millions of years before habitation in North America, the marine turtle nested along the coastal waters of Mexico. The palm laden playas were free of development and offered an ideal location for the hundreds of nesting turtles. However, with progressive development and poaching, the nesting population was reduced to less than 100 per year.
With the help of Frank and "GROUPO Ecologico de las Costa Verde" the quest to save these incredible creatures continues. Since l991, the group has released over 34,000 Olive Ridley, 650 Leatherback and 42 Eastern Pacific Green Turtles.
Anyone visiting San Pancho would enjoy a visit to the turtle nursery. From July to October, you can observe young hatchling turtles released to the ocean. Trained staff members assist in their journey to the sea. Between November 1st and June 15th a mock nursery is constructed on the north side of the resort, so you can get an idea how it would appear during mid August when the nursery is filled to capacity.
The turtle conservation project is funded by public donation and continues with the help of volunteers. Donations and volunteers are gratefully accepted.
