Explore the diversity of Costa Rica’s tropical terrain while challenging yourself with a variety of human-powered adventure activities. A healthy spirit of adventure is all you need to enjoy this active trip. Starting with exhilarating whitewater rafting through tropical rainforest on the Pacuare River, we move on to sea kayaking along the rugged Pacific coastline and finally mountain biking down the Nicoya Peninsula on dirt roads and hard packed beach sand - all the way to the beach town of Mal Pais.
DAY PLACE/ ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
1 SAN JOSE
(Arrival) A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Our representative will go over your trip and answer any questions you may have. The evening is free to explore San Jose.
2 PACUARE RIVER
(
Rafting) The first day begins with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the “put in” on the Pacuare River for our two-day whitewater adventure. We will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III-IV rapids exploring the magnificent river valley. This afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, “El Nido del Tigre.” Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river, take time to explore the lush environment first hand, looking out for toucans overhead or simply relaxing in a hammock to the sounds of the river.(B,L,D)
3 PACUARE RIVER
(Rafting) Today the Pacuare takes us through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. We maneuver through the exhilarating rapids and point out the intricacies of the rainforest at the river’s edge. Along the way we take time out to do a side hike to some waterfalls and have lunch on the shore. “Taking out” near the town of Siquirres, we return to San Jose appreciating the breathtaking views as we pass through Braulio Carillo National Park. 4 PACIFIC OCEAN
(Sea Kayaking) We leave San Jose at dawn for the journey to the Pacific Coast crossing the Gulf of Nicoya by ferry at the mouth of the Tempisque River. Our sea kayaks are waiting at the beach where we spend the afternoon learning and practicing the basics of sea kayak technique and safety. A short paddle around the bay will prepare us for tomorrow’s adventure. The evening is yours to explore Samara or relax at the hotel. (B, L)
5 PACIFIC OCEAN
(
Sea Kayaking) Today we paddle down the coast exploring the pristine beaches and rugged rocky points. Keep your eyes peeled along the way for sea turtles basking in the turquoise water, flying fish darting through the air, or a glimpse of a playful dolphin. We land our kayaks on the palm fringed white sand beach in time for lunch and a cool drink at the Mirador viewpoint. At Playa Carillo you’ll have the afternoon to choose from a variety of options (not included in trip price). Your guide can arrange for: The Tree Trek which affords spectacular views over the coast from the canopy, a choice of hiking or mountain biking routes or horseback riding. Scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and surfing are also popular activities in this area or you may just opt to relax by the hotel pool. (B,L)
6 PACIFIC OCEAN
(
Biking) Mountain bikes are our means to continue exploring this spectacular coastline. An incredible playground of dirt roads, rolling hills, trails and hard-packed beach sand await us as we mount up and head south. We stop frequently to rest in the shade and refresh ourselves with a cool drink as we pass through a variety of picturesque local villages. Enjoy your afternoon on the beautiful secluded beach of Playa Coyote where sunset views are incomparable. (B, L, D)
7 PACIFIC OCEAN
(
Biking) After a hearty breakfast we set out for a day of great riding on country roads, beaches and across rivers. En-route, the animal life commonly seen includes a variety of monkeys, several types of small reptiles and rodents, birds, aquatic life and the occasional snake. By early afternoon we are at your hotel in laid-back Mal Pais, which is a perfect spot for your final night on the Pacific coast. (B, L)
8 BEACH / SAN JOSE
The morning is free to spend a few more hours enjoying the beach. At mid-day you taxi to Tambor for your local flight back to San Jose. The evening may be spent taking in the sights and sounds of San Jose.
9 SAN JOSE (departure)
A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will drive you to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
