Whitewater Rafting / Beaching / Canals
An ideal trip for those who want a little adventure, beautiful sights and some time to just plain kick back on the beach. Enjoy the excitement of whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River, exploring Tortuguero, sightseeing through the canals and relaxing on the palm fringed beaches of the Pacific Coast. From one side of Costa Rica to the other, an exciting and fun way to get a good taste of this diverse country and enjoy some relaxing holiday time.
DAY PLACE/ ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
1 SAN JOSE
(Arrival) A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Our representative will go over the trip with you and answer any questions you may have. The evening is free to explore San Jose.
2 PACUARE RIVER
Whitewater Rafting Pacuare River Pick up time between 6:30 - 7:30am - 2 ½ hour drive to river - 1 ½ - 2 hours of rafting (10 kms) - time at the camp to explore the area - hike to waterfalls, playing in the river, relaxing in hammocks.
(Rafting) The first day begins with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the “put in” on the Pacuare River for our two-day whitewater adventure. We will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III-IV rapids exploring the magnificent river valley. This afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, “El Nido del Tigre.” Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river, take time to explore the lush environment first hand looking out for toucans overhead or simply relaxing in a hammock to the sounds of the river. 3 PACUARE RIVER
3 Whitewater Rafting Pacuare River 3 - 5 hours of rafting (17 kms) - time in the morning to enjoy the area - relaxing buffet breakfast - lunch on the side of the river - side hike up a creek to great swimming hole - after the rafting trip short drive to Cano Blanco – motorboat to Tortuguero Hotel in Tortuguero
(Rafting) Today the Pacuare takes us through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. We maneuver through the exhilarating rapids and point out the intricacies of the rainforest at the river’s edge. Along the way we take time out to do a side hike to some waterfalls and have lunch on the shore. “Taking out” near the town of Siquirres we drive to Caño Blanco where we will board the motorboat that will take us to Tortuguero. 4 CARIBBEAN
4 Canals Tortuguero Free day to relax and enjoy the area – walk to the nearby town – optional nature boat trip through the canals - June to October, Turtle watch on the beach at night (price not included) B,L,D Hotel in Tortuguero
(R & R in Tortuguero) The day is free to relax and enjoy the area. If you have some energy to leave poolside a walk into town or on the beach is a nice way to loosen up. A visit to the community museum in town is a worthwhile stop. Optional activities include a nature trip that involves a boat trip through the canals and a hike to Cerro Tortuguero or explore the intricate canals in a “panga”. The gentle pace allows sufficient time to enjoy the surroundings while learning about the flora and fauna and animal life found in the area. At night, if you are lucky enough, you will have the amazing experience of watching the turtles lay their eggs on the beach. (From June to October only) this tour is not included on the trip price, but can be arranged at the hotel’s Front Desk directly). (B, L, D)
5&6 MANUEL ANTONIO
(Exploring the Coastal Area) Early in the morning, we will take a domestic flight back to San Jose, where you will make a connection with a flight to the Central Pacific Coast; where you will be surrounded by the exotic atmosphere of Manuel Antonio, Quepos. The next few days can be spent exploring the area.
Visit Manuel Antonio National Park, which is famous for its beautiful beaches and abundant wildlife, relax at the pool or on the beach and when you feel energetic there are a number of options to choose from (not included in trip price): sea kayak, visit to the hot springs, dolphin tour and deep-sea fishing are also popular activities in this area. These activities can be organized by the hotel. (B)
7 BEACH / SAN JOSE
(Return to San Jose) The morning is free to spend a few more hours enjoying the beach. At mid-day a local flight takes you back to San Jose. The evening may be spent taking in the sights and sounds of San Jose. (B)
8 SAN JOSE
(Departure) A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will drive you to the airport for your return flight home. (B)
