DAY PLACE/ ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
1 SAN JOSE
(Arrival) A Coast to Coast Adventures representative will welcome you at the airport and take you to your hotel. Our representative will go over your trip and answer any questions you may have. The evening is free to explore San Jose.
2 PACUARE RIVER
(Rafting) The first day begins with a scenic drive along the foothills of the Irazú and Turrialba volcanoes to the “put in” on the Pacuare River for our two-day whitewater adventure. We will run a total of 27 kilometers of Class III-IV rapids exploring the magnificent river valley. This afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, “El Nido del Tigre.” Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river, take time to explore the lush environment first hand looking out for toucans overhead or simply relaxing in a hammock to the sounds of the river. (B, L, D)
3 PACUARE RIVER
(Rafting) Today the Pacuare takes us through virgin rainforest, cascading waterfalls and river carved canyons. We maneuver through the exhilarating rapids and point out the intricacies of the rainforest at the river’s edge. Along the way we take time out to do a side hike to some waterfalls and have lunch on the shore. “Taking out” near the town of Siquirres we drive to the small town of La Fortuna, the closest town to Arenal Volcano. (B, L)
4 ARENAL VOLCANO
(Hiking and Hot Springs) We begin the day with a hike to a spectacular 120-foot waterfall - swimming below this huge cascade is a thrill you won’t soon forget. From here we drive around to the active side of the volcano and hike to a lava flow from a major 1992 eruption. The hike takes us through tropical rainforest until we reach a wall of lava rock. Here we scramble up on top of the lava to appreciate the power and size of Arenal. This is the safest, closest place to the active volcano. We end the day with dinner and a soak at the Tabacon Hot Springs Resort, and if the night is clear, we get the unique opportunity to see the red glow of the volcano’s molten lava from the relaxing thermal waters. (B, L, D)
5&6 CARRILLO BEACH AREA
(Exploring the Coastal Area) Today we leave the Arenal area and drive around picturesque Lake Arenal to the cattle ranching plains of Guanacaste and across the Nicoya Peninsula to Playa Carrillo. The next few days can be spent exploring the Samara / Carrillo coastal area on land and water. Relax at the pool or on the beach and when you feel energetic there are a number of options to choose from (not included in trip price). We have a number of active trips operating in the Samara area including; the Tree Trek which affords spectacular views over the coast from the canopy, sea kayaking, and horseback riding. Scuba diving, deep-sea fishing and surfing are also popular activities in this area and our representative can organize any of these at your request. (B)
