Surrounded by secular olives groves,immersed in the quiet of the green Umbrian hills,Il Castello dei Montali dominates one of the most beautiful view of the Trasimeno Lake (360 degrees). Situated in the district of Panicale,this medieval settlement riceives its name from the feudal lords that resided there.Historical research dates the origin of the "Castrum Montalis"to the XI century.In this period the towers and surroundindg walls were built. From the XIII century was subjected to the powerful municipality of Panicale and as it was the highest and most impregnable castle of the area it became a keystone of Perugia's defensive sistem.
In 1402,during a period of rebellion against the Pope and of Perugia's submission to the Viscount of Milan ,Il Castello dei Montali was conquired by the papal troops but Perugia won it back only one year later.
By the end of the XV century,the Priors of Perugia erected a new tower and fortified the walls,that were to be dameged in '1600 during the Barberini war. This medieval village,so rich in history,has been brought back to its ancient splendour by careful restauration. Twenty-two splendid apartaments,complete with kitchen and beautifully furnished,are located in the main building and in the tower and other adjacent "dipendances"of the Castle itself.
Of the twenty-two apartament aproximately half are for rent while the others are kept from the Proprietors for their short holidays.Since only a small number of guests are accomodated in such a vast setting,their stay will inevitably be distinguished by immense peace and quiet.
Without disturbing the architectural beauty all possible comforts are offered to the guests.A swimming pool and tennis court have been buit in a little valley about 800 meters below the castle, so as not to detract from its anciente majesty.
A guardian is always in residence. In a nearby Inn there is an international award winning vegetarian resturant that offers special services to the people of Castello dei Montali ,at the guest's disposal for whomever may not want to cook. The size of the apartaments vary from studio apartaments for "singles" to big flats for six persons. Therefore there is a vast selection to choose from depending on the needs of each guests. The Castello dei Montali offers the possibility of an exellent and sofisticated holiday in one of the most beautiful and panoramic spot in Umbria.
