You have always dreamed about an exploration cruise in tropical waters? Want to combine splendid beaches, crystal clear seas, fascinating reefs, traditional sailing, lush jungles and rich cultures into one vacation?
Picture yourself on the deck of our newly built Buginese schooner, on your way to discover yet another remote island east of Bali. Travel in comfort in a truly relaxed and unique way, aboard Ombak Putih.
A sailing cruise is the perfect way to discover this part of the world. Snorkel and swim in crystal clear water above exquisite coral reefs, join our cultural tours, or simply relax and enjoy the experience of life aboard a traditional sailing boat. There really is no more reliable, comfortable and safe way to discover the exotic beauty of the Spice Islands of Indonesia than on board the Ombak Putih.
All our 7/8-days cruises either start or end (or both) in Bali, which makes a cruise with the Ombak Putih an ideal extension of your next visit to Bali.
Whenever you join a cruise, you will visit East Bali, Lombok and the Jurassic Dragons of Komodo. We also sail to Sumba and South Sulawesi. We have specially designed our 36m Buginese Schooner (pinisi) to make your voyage as comfortable as possible. We have tried to take maximum advantage of the available space and to provide you with the best and friendliest service possible. Whenever possible six hundred square meters of sails are raised, but we rely on an engine to safeguard our schedule.
We will sail you from island to island in traditional style blended with all modern comforts. The hull and deck house are completely made of wood. Below deck there are twelve spacious cabins, each with private bathroom and air-conditioning. The Ombak Putih is a forerunner in safety and environmental protection at sea. We combine tradition with modern technology and awareness of Indonesia's natural resources.

Schedule:
Volcanoes & Dragons
From March until mid October the Ombak Putih sails the waters of the Lesser Sunda Islands or Nusa Tenggara.
Nusa Tenggara is part of a huge volcanic belt that stretches from Sumatra to the Moluccas. Along your journey to Maumere you will pass some impressive volcanoes like Gunung Agung on Bali, Rinjani on Lombok, Tambora on Sumbawa and Keli Mutu in Flores. A visit to the famous three-colored lakes of Keli Mutu is a very popular part of our Bali - Flores itinerary. Other highlights on your journey along the northern Sunda islands are the handicrafts sold in Lombok, a jungle hike on Moyo island, an encounter with the fierce dragons at Komodo and Rinca, and the beautiful coral reefs of Satonda and Komodo.
Most of our cruises to the Lesser Sundas depart from Bali. The ship leaves early for a visit to the traditional Bali Aga village of Tenganan in East Bali. The next day you can join a land excursion to a traditional village as well as taking in other highlights around West-Lombok. The ship then sails to the little known island of Satonda with its mysterious crater lake and beautiful coral gardens. From Satonda, the ship sails to the Komodo National park, where you will encounter the fierce Komodo dragons. The ship then heads westwards again to Bima for a visit to a Sumbawa hill tribe. We then sail to the fishing village of Alas to see traditional dances. Before returning to Bali, the Ombak Putih stops for a relaxing morning on a deserted beach at Gili Nanggu, just off the coast of Lombok. There are also Nusa Tenggara cruises that start or end in Bima, East Sumbawa. From here we will visit Sumba. Sumba is known for it's fine horses, massive stone-slab tombs in front of traditional houses that resemble a giant straw hat, and the annual Pasola festival, that celebrates the return of a type of sea worm to the southern shores of the island. Here you can buy magnificent handicrafts and artifacts that have found their way to many museums around the world. From Sumba, the Ombak Putih heads north again to Rinca and Komodo, and then to Alas, Lombok and Bali.
Bugis & Spices From From October till the end of December we sail from Bali to South Sulawesi.
These cruises start (or end) in Bali, and will bring you to Gili Nanggu, Satonda, Bima and Komodo National Park. The ship then heads north, crossing the Flores Sea for Bonerate, a secluded string of islands famous among divers for its spectacular coral gardens. From Bonerate, the Ombak Putih sails to Selayar where you will visit an ancient fortress and a colorful local market. Another highlight of this cruise is a visit to Bira, home of the Buginese seafarers who still construct their traditional wooden sailing ships alongside the shores. The cruise ends in the bustling city of Ujung Pandang, with its many historical sites, picturesque harbor and seaside promenade.

CONSTRUCTION:
The Ombak Putih was especially built for tourism. After finding a suitable shipyard, construction started in May 1996. Although Bira is widely recognized as the center for wooden shipbuilding, many shipyards have moved to South Kalimantan because of a scarcity of good and affordable timber in South Sulawesi.
Batulicin is the new center for construction of, especially larger, wooden vessels. It takes four uncomfortable hours by car through endless marshlands from the provincial capital of Banjarmasin to Batulicin. But your harsh journey is rewarded by the amazing sight of dozens of wooden vessels in various stages of construction alongside a muddy river.
Wooden vessels constructed in Bira, South Sulawesi
Together with our captain, who supervised construction of his/our vessel, we discussed the measurements of our schooner with local ship builders. They needed nothing more than a quick sketch on the back of a cigar box and some basic measurements. The length of the keel decides the rest of the measurements, such as overall length, beam and width. A naval architect from Holland would later recalculate the hull measurements and found them almost perfect!

Detailed design drawings from the ship's deck house and interior then gave directions to the ship builders in turning the vessel into a tourism commodity. After 10 months in Batulicin, the Ombak Putih was sailed to Surabaya (capital of East Java) for finishing. Here the air-conditioning, electricity, bathroom fittings and other equipment was installed. On 11 August 1996, the Ombak Putih was ready for her first trip with guests.

On top of the deck house at the aft side of the boat, a spacious sun deck overlooks the sea. Here you can read on one of the comfortable deck chairs or relax in a hammock. We have placed a tent to protect you from the blazing sun.
Sail Plan The Ombak Putih has two solid masts of iron wood, a mainmast and a mizzen mast. Although she is called a Buginese schooner, she is not a real schooner as for these kind of vessels it is more common for the foremast to be shorter.
The Ombak Putih has three (triangular) jibs, a mainsail, maintop sail, mizzen and mizzen topsail (all quadrilateral). No booms are used for the mainsail and mizzen.
Cabins The Ombak Putih has twelve cabins below deck. Most cabins are similar in size. There are two smaller cabins that are usually reserved for people traveling alone.

Each cabin has its own shower and toilet. There are only bunk beds, which leaves plenty of space to move around. An individually controlled air-conditioner keeps the cabin cool. Towels are changed every two days.
