Today, Songkran is still the most important of all the Thai festivals and holidays. It marks the beginning of a new astrological year and is much in keeping with the old lunar calendar of Siam. It is officially celebrated on April 13th, but the festival actually takes place over a period of 3 days. It includes the 'Troot Festival' as well as all the merit-making at Buddhist temples and the ultimate Songkran, or The Pouring of Water ritual. Each year, the three-day celebration of Songkran consists of many activities.
Monday, 12. April, 2004 Chiang Mai
From Chiang Mai Airport or Chiang Mai railway station, transfer to your hotel. Check in upon arrival. Next, depart to visit mountain temple of Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, the most famous landmark of Chiang Mai Town by tucked away in the mountain at 1,073 meters above sea level. This temple is set amongst the peaks of Doi Suthep. It has a lovely setting with a panoramic view of Chiang Mai and the Mae Ping River valley. Then, come back to hotel. Overnight at your hotel in Chiang Mai.
Special Note: This is a day for cleaning the house and for general preparation for the New Year. In the evening it is traditional for Thais to dress up as a signal of the coming New Year.
Tuesday, 13. April, 2004 Chiang Mai (B, L)
a.m. After breakfast, enjoy half day city and temples tour. Start by visiting Wat Phra Singh where is located in the center of the city. The main chapel houses the revered Phra Singh Buddha image who, only this festival will be taken out-door for pouring of water ritual parade by local Thai people. Then, proceed to visit Wat Chedi Luang. The temple was originally constructed in 1404 and the chedi was enlarged to a height of 86 meters. Next, continue to Wat Chiang Mun, the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. Enshrined in the temple is a tiny crystal Buddha called Pra Seh-Tang Kamanee. It is thought to have the power to bring rain. Another image, called Phra Sila Khoa, reflects the fine workmanship of Indian craftsmen from thousand of years ago. Lunch at local restaurant.
p.m. In the afternoon, join the parade of Songkran procession (together with guide). This is the parade through Chiang Mai comprised of Buddha images and attendants on floats, which are accompanied by minstrels and the town's people. The procession begins at Chiang Mai Train station, passing through Nawarat Bridge on the Mae Ping River and moves toTa Pae Gate before approaching its final destination of Wat Phra Singh. In the evening, transfer back to hotel. Overnight at your hotel in Chiang Mai.
Special note: This is the day when the pouring of water begins. It used to be practice to pour gently, but the fun-loving Thais have transposed this into a water free-for-all.
