Surin is world famous for the Elephant Round Up and for its many Khmers sanctuaries, a wide variety of handicrafts, its silk and its rich culture. Surin has been hosting the Elephant Round up Festival since 1960. Each year, thousands of tourists watch the local mahouts manifest their skills to control the elephants. During the festival, a troop of 100 elephants will get involved in the show which also includes elephant sport matches. Also happening are the elephant exhibitions from many governmental and private sectors, fun fairs and all kinds of traditional plays and performances.
Saturday, November 15, 2003 Bangkok – Ayuthaya – Pimai – Surin (L/D)
AM Pick up from your hotel in Bangkok and transfer to Ayuthaya, one of the former capital cities of Siam. Visit the historical site of Ayuthaya with Wat Chai Wattanaram which was built in 1600s by the King Prasat Thong, Wat Phra Sri Sanpetch dominated by the three towering Ayuthayan style chedis and Wat Mongkol Borpitr which houses a massive bronze Buddha image.
Afterwards, transfer from Ayuthaya via Sara Buri, Kaeng Koi, Klang Dong and Pak Chong to Nakorn Ratchasima for lunch at a local restaurant.
PM Depart Nakorn Ratchasima to visit Prasat Phnom Wan, a small Khmer Ruin which resembles Pimai. Proceed to Pimai Historical Park to visit Prasat Hin Pimai, one of the most splendid examples of classical Khmer religious architecture found outside Cambodia. The sanctuary was probably constructed between the late 1000’s and mid 1100’s. The main shrine is rich of Hindu and Mahayana Buddhist Iconography, including of the Hindu Gods; Shiva, Vishnu and scenes from the Great Hindu Epic, the Ramayana.
Also visit to Pimai National Museum which contains a striking collection of ancient Khmer and Dvaravati artifacts including lintels and pediments. Afterwards, leave Nakorn Ratchasima via Huay Tha Laeng and Lam Plai Maas for Surin for overnight.

AM After breakfast, attend Elephant Round up at Sri Narong Stadium. Lunch at a local restaurant.
PM After lunch, visit the Khmer Ruins scattered around in this region; Prasat Muang Thi, Prasat Chom Phra and Prasat Sri Khorapoum. Dinner & accommodation at The Thong Tarin Hotel (or The Wong Thong Hotel)
Monday, November 17, 2003 Surin – Buriram – Aranya Prathed – Bangkok (B/L/D)
AM After breakfast, transfer to Nang Rong to visit Prasat Phnom Rung, a Khmer Sanctuary located on the hilltop of the dead volcano. The main shrine of the sanctuary contains a bas relief depiction of episodes from the Hindu Epics; Ramayana and Maha Bharata. Proceed to Prakon Chai to visit Prasat Muang Tam, a charming Khmer Sanctuary located in the low land of Phnom Rung. The sanctuary itself is surrounded by a lovely pond with a Naga balustrade around. Lunch at a local restaurant,
PM Transfer to Ta Phra Ya to visit Prasat Sa Dok Kok Thom, a Khmer temple ruin situated at Cambodia’s border. Proceed to Aranya Prathed to visit the local border market at Klong Luek Check Point and Prasat Khao Noi, a tiny Khmer Ruin build in pink sand stone, before continuing to Bangkok.
In the early evening, arrival in Bangkok and check-in at your hotel.
